Web based communities feature extraordinary economies of fandom, favors, and friendship. But who ends up with most of the money they generate? Think about all the work you put into a Facebook or LinkedIn profile, and why people like Mark Zuckerberg, Reid Hoffman, or the few thousand people surrounding them are getting extremely rich from it. Are these “Lords of the Cloud” (as Jaron Lanier styles them) paragons of capitalist virtue? Or are they really economic actors of a much older vintage: bosses of digital sharecroppers, or feudal aristocrats living high (and autocratically) from the sweat, distraction, and typing of a mass precariat?
